Human Urinary System

* Human urinary system consist of a pair of kidneys,a pair of ureters,a urinary bladder and a urethra.

* The kidneys are located in the abdominal cavity, one on either side of the vertebral column,at the level between 12th thoracic vertebra and 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebra and are attached to the dorsal body wall.

* Each kidney is bean shaped reddish brown and measures about 10-12 cm in thickness; it weighs about 150gms.

* On the concave side is a median, longitudinal opening called hilus renails through which renal artery and nerves enter and the renal vein and ureter come out of the kidney.

* The hilum leads into an extensive funnel-shaped space called pelvis, with projection called calyces.

* The pelvis is surrounded by the kidney tissue, the outer layer of which is called the renal cortex and and the inner layer, renal medulla.

* The renal medulla projects into the pelvis in the form of conical structures, called renal pyramids, that project into the calyces.

* The cortex extends in between the renal pyramids as renal columns of Bertini.

* The renal pelvis continues to the outside through the hilium as a thin muscular tube called, ureter .

* The two ureters open obliquely into the urinary bladder.

* The urinary bladder is a hollow, muscular sac-like structure that temporarily stores urine

* Urethra is the membranous tube that arises from the    neck of the bladder and conducts the urine to the exterior.
